Town Engineer/Community Development Director

Regular, permanent, full-time position, 40 hours/week, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday – Thursday, schedule may vary based on need. Position is appointed by the Town Manager.
Responsibilities:
Under direction of the Town Manager, this position is responsible for a wide variety of technical and administrative tasks in managing the Engineering & Community Development Departments of a growing town of 5,500 in rural southeast Arizona. Typical activities include: developing budget and concept information, performing design work and preparing construction documents, technical review of engineering and design documents prepared by others, pursuing grant opportunities, administering contracts and issuing purchase orders, overseeing consultants, supervising department staff, and coordinating with maintenance crews.
Additionally, this person meets often with citizens and other customers, deals with elected officials, coordinates with other management staff members, and interacts with outside agencies, vendors, and contractors. The Engineer/Director participates in the regular meetings of the Town Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission as well as attends other hearings and meetings as necessary. Occasional out-of-town travel is required.
The Engineering & Community Development Departments are responsible for the reviewing of submittals, issuing permits, inspecting new work, designing and constructing public infrastructure, mapping and archiving, ensuring regulatory compliance for utilities, and coordinating planning and zoning issues.
Required Qualifications:
The candidate must possess a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. This person must be registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Arizona, or be able to obtain registration with 12 months. Registration as a Land Surveyor is desirable. Candidate must possess good oral and written communication skills and be able to deal effectively with others. This position requires a working knowledge of engineering office methods, public
works, urban planning, utilities, and construction techniques. Setting includes both office and field work throughout the year.
Preferred skills include: AutoCAD / Civil3D, hydrology / hydraulic abilities, sanitary sewer collection system design, ability to read, interpret and prepare legal descriptions, and experience with Trimble GPS and conventional survey equipment.
Compensation:
Salary depends on qualifications. Salary range is $96,000 to $136,000. Position is FLSA exempt status. Standard Town benefits apply, including medical, dental, leave and participation in the Arizona State Retirement System. This position is assigned a Town vehicle and fuel which they may also use to commute to and from work.
